Last weekend, I attended a great fall camporee in the Mountain Valley District. I saw incredible engagement with youth and a dynamic, fun program unfolding across the hills. Kudos to a well-executed camporee! It got me thinking …
This is what Scouting looks like at its best – trained leaders, energized volunteers, and youth thriving in an environment built just for them. That kind of impact doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because adults choose to show up.
Montana’s youth deserve our best. Not our leftovers. Not our excuses. Our best.
There are plenty of opportunities to watch from the sidelines or offer commentary from above. However, boots on the ground – that’s where the real impact happens. That’s where lives are changed. That’s where character is built.
So get trained. Engage. Don’t be just another adult who looks the other way when a Scout needs guidance, encouragement, or accountability. Our young people are watching us. They’re learning from how we lead, how we serve, and how we respond when things get hard.
The future of our state – and every local community within it – depends on engaged adults who care enough to act. Scouting isn’t just a program. It’s a movement powered by people who believe in building something better, one youth at a time.
If not us, who?
If not now, when?
Let’s raise the bar. Let’s be the kind of leaders our Scouts deserve.

‘Volunteer and you can take the lead’

I have never met a volunteer who resents giving up their time to help and inspire others. In fact, the opposite is generally true. They’ve learned something that is often forgotten: that volunteering works both ways. For sure, the recipients benefit in the obvious ways, but the truth is that the volunteer gains the most.GQ: Bear Grylls – ‘Volunteer and you can take the lead’
