I’m particularly partial to the still image. In a world dominated by video, still images hold a unique power. They invite us to pause, reflect, and feel.
Neurologists believe that they have deep connections with human memory and, at a glance, can evoke memories and emotions from our subconscious. Our brains are incredibly efficient at storing images and specific visual qualities associated with moments.
That’s why the Montana Council Photo Contest is one of my favorite events.
Scouting in Montana offers endless opportunities. From mountain trails and campfire evenings, serene lakes, and unexpected rainbows, to summer at camp games, activities, and fun – every moment tells a story. Over the years, the photos from our Scouts and Scouters bring these adventures to life and take us places not all get to go.
Now is the time to dig back through those phones, hard drives, and archives. We invite Scouts and Scouters of all ages to share their stories. Whether it’s an action shot of Scouts on an adventure or working on a service project, a candid moment of camaraderie at Camp Melita Island, or a stunning star-filled sky over K-M Scout Ranch, we want to see how Scouting inspires you.
Our favorite images we receive demonstrate the Scouting story. We love those special moments between Scouts and peers, but even when it’s a photo of a rainbow, a waterfall, or a mountain vista, the adventure behind the frame reverberates in our memories.
Deadline: Jan. 20, 2025
Featured entries may appear in our council calendar, social media, or print materials. We feature all winners at the Montana Council Annual Convention and the Grand Prize Winner receives special recognition.
Of course, we are also hypervigilant in assuring images demonstrate and reflect best practices, the Guide to Safe Scouting, youth protection, and the overall safety of youth. We appreciate your attention to this detail as well.
We can’t wait to see your world through your lens!
