Membership Promotion Plan

Like the roots of a tree, the more we effectively connect with members throughout the local community and translate those connections to new members, the stronger the unit and the healthier the council will be.

This plan is designed to do exactly that – help units make those connections throughout their communities.

By filling out the form below, a unit shares with us their idea of how they plan to recruit. The goal is to pick 12 main areas to focus on to market your unit. Your unit may have more than one person submitting this form and that’s ok. Different people may commit to different areas for your unit.

If a unit has completed one or more in the past, think of the positive results that the unit will have by choosing, planning and executing 12 of them. These are not difficult or time-consuming activities.

Response to this commitment helps us better understand how Montana Council staff can help a unit and where we can focus more attention.

Membership Promotion Plan

The Membership Plan is designed to help your unit think strategically about your sign-up event and promotion. After submitting, you and your district executive will receive a copy via email.

PACK PROGRAM PROMOTION

Use the list below to build your unit’s Membership Promotion Plan. Some actions are more effective than others; however, all will help you to grow your unit.

1. Invite-a-Friend campaign – use buddy/peer-to-peer cards and have a special invite to the Recruitment Event.

2. Parent-to-Parent campaign – encourage parents to contact one or more of their friends with kids and personally invite them to a recruitment.

3. School Flyer – ask schools if you can send a flyer home in homework packets. Flyer can also be used as an invitation when handed out.

4. School talks – Connect with schools to talk to students during lunchtime, recess, or for two minutes each in individual classrooms.

5. Yard sign placed in areas within neighborhoods and through fares inside school’s boundaries along with the pickup/drop-off area at school. Strategically placed on street corners in the community. Locations should be high traffic with clear visibility (4-way residential stop signs, near neighborhood parks, long traffic lights. Think about where a sign would catch your eye on your daily drive).

6. Geofence your Recruitment Event (paid social media promotion). Work with your DE on this.

7. Open House/Back-to-School night booth – collect leads if your school permits.

8. Customized invitations to families (utilize class rosters, ask teachers).

9. School newsletter article (ask your principal or PTA). Pay for advertising if needed.

10. Display case/bulletin board in your school.

11. Teacher email reminder/announcement – have parents ask teachers to send an email home to their class – provide a draft email.

12. Attend/participate in your school’s carnival or festival – gather leads. Volunteer to host a booth or lead an activity or assist with setup/breakdown.

13. Hand out fliers and stickers in the pick-up/drop-off line at school (with permission).

14. Hang a large banner on a school’s fence.

15. Posters placed in and around the school.

16. Set up a table/booth at a popular park/library during the weekend – hand out stickers and fliers.

17. Community marquee-board – contact a church or business about adding your joining info on the sign in front of their location. Ask your Charter Org!

18. Post flyers on community boards in local library/community centers.

19. Promote at a after school care/tutor facilities.

20. Distribute flyers at youth sport practices/events (Little League or Soccer).

21. Distribute flyers, posters and stickers to local businesses, restaurants/coffee shops.

22. Community event/festival participation – hand out flyers/stickers or have a booth and collect leads (farmers market, summer festivals, Trunk or Treat, parades, cultural fairs, etc.). Any event with elementary-age kids and families.

23. Create a customized unit promotional video and distribute through social media, school communications, and place on your unit website/page.

24. Post the event on Nextdoor – use multiple families from different neighborhoods to increase your reach.

25. Social Media Blitz – encourage parents/leaders to post info and testimonial in various locations: neighborhood Facebook pages, school/parent Facebook groups, community buy/sell pages, official school/PTA social media pages, etc.

TROOP PROGRAM PROMOTION

11. Establish a partnership with at least 2 Troops in your area and support them with at least 3 of the following tasks: a) Help them plan their calendar of activities. – b) Provide knowledgeable Scouters to support 1 Pack or Troop recruitment. – c)Bridging Scouts to your program

12. Set up a table/booth at a popular park/library during the weekend – hand out stickers and fliers.

13. Community marquee-board – contact a church or business about adding your joining info on the sign in front of their location. Ask your charter org!

14. Post flyers on community boards in local library/community centers.

15. Bring flyers or information sheets with you while doing a service project in a public space.

16. Distribute flyers at youth sport practices/events.

17. Distribute flyers, posters and stickers to local businesses, restaurants/coffee shops.

18. CCommunity event/festival participation-hand out flyers/stickers or have a booth and collect leads (farmers market, summer festivals, Trunk or Treat, parades, cultural fairs, etc). Offer to assist event organizers with setup/breakdown.
