Summer Unit Program – What’s Your Plan?

Now Is The Time To Start Planning A Great Summer Experience

“Summer? Our pack/troop doesn’t ‘meet’ in the summer!” If this is what your unit is thinking, we strongly encourage you to think differently about the summer and the great opportunities available to keep Scouting active during the summer break from school. Now is the time to start planning for a great summer experience for your Scouts.

Cub Scouts

Family Campout – Take advantage of the beautiful summer weather by holding a pack family campout. For many families, this may be their first camping experience, so be sure to help make it as easy and enjoyable as possible. Simple plans for meals, some fun hikes and other activities, and a great campfire in the evening is all it takes! Don’t forget that a BALOO-trained registered leader must be present for any Cub Scout pack camping.

Outdoor Pack/Den Activities – Look for easy-to-plan activities, such as nearby hikes and day trips. A gathering at the local pool or play day park can also be an easy-to-plan outdoor activity. Dens can utilize some of the elective adventures for outdoor activities as well.

District Day Camp – Check with your district and plan to attend Day Camp. Be sure to communicate the dates and registration information to all families and promote attendance. Day Camp is an easy, nearby, and FUN way for your Scouts and families to stay engaged this summer.

Summer Camp at K-M – All current Cub Lion-Webelos Scouts are invited to K-M Cub Scout and Webelos/AOL camps in July. This fun and action-filled three-night camp is perfect for individual scouts with a parent or the whole den. Registration is open, and it’s filling up fast! Family End-of-Summer Picnic – An end-of-summer get-together is a great way to reconnect your pack’s families, welcome potential new recruits, and get rolling right into the school year program. Picnics or playground gatherings can be easy to plan! Having families “Bring Your Own Food” can keep the cost down, as well. Some play equipment and an organized game or two are all that’s needed for the program for this easy event. Be sure to use this as an opportunity to recognize advancement/achievements and to promote your calendar for the upcoming school year.

Troops & Crews

Summer Weekend Campouts – Montana has so many amazing natural resources, campgrounds, and other places to visit and camp. Mild summer weather is the perfect time for a unique trip that might not be part of your regular “rotation” of campsites. Look for locations that have great summer activities nearby and available.

Outdoor Activities – Look for nearby activities, such as fishing or hiking areas, horseback riding, aquatics activities, etc., that would be great day trips. Many locations offer group discounts, and often some advancement requirements can be met, as well. Don’t forget to check the Scouting America regulations regarding certifications and requirements, such as Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat.

Summer Camp – Hopefully, you’re already planning for summer camp. If not, get your unit booked asap. Limited space is available at both K-M Scout Ranch and Camp Melita Island.

High Adventure Trip – Our older Scouts are ready for more adventure, so a high adventure trip is a great opportunity for them. Montana is filled with amazing places for multi-day backpacking and float trips. Offering programs for older Scouts is a great way to keep them engaged in Scouting and your unit.
