Scouting America, Montana Council thrives because of the dedication, energy, and passion of its volunteers. From leading dens and troops to organizing events and managing the council, volunteers are the backbone of the program. But what truly elevates the Scouting experience, for both youth and adults, is training.
Training is not just a box to check.
It’s a pathway to confidence, competence, and connection. Whether you’re new to Scouting or a seasoned leader, training equips you with the tools to deliver a safe, enriching, and fun program. It provides insights into youth development, teaches best practices for outdoor adventures, and ensures adherence to safety protocols and Scouting policies.
Well-trained volunteers create stronger units.
When leaders understand the Scouting program, they can plan engaging activities, encourage advancement, and inspire youth to grow into responsible citizens. Trained volunteers are more likely to feel supported and stay involved longer, which builds continuity and community within units. Lastly, they are the most likely to recruit other youth and adults to join. Training is Key!

Scouting America offers training in many accessible formats – online modules, in-person sessions, and immersive experiences like Wood Badge. Each offers valuable takeaways and opportunities to connect with fellow volunteers, share ideas, and grow as a leader.
If you haven’t taken training recently, now is a great time to jump in. And if you’re already trained, consider mentoring someone new. Your example might be the spark that keeps the flame of Scouting burning bright for generations to come.
Because when volunteers are trained, everyone wins – especially our Scouts.
