We owe it to those we lead and those we form into leaders – and ultimately, ourselves – to be the best-trained Scouts and Scouters we can be. Please take the time and share the word on National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and Wood Badge. These training courses are designed to help elevate our leadership skills, not just in Scouting but across all facets of our lives.
We can’t support another’s foundation to become “Prepared. Fore Life,” until we have built the foundation of great leadership in ourselves.

NYLT
National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and other situations demanding leadership of self and others.
The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what they must KNOW, and what they must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.
The NYLT course for the Montana Council is scheduled for Aug 16th – 22nd, 2020. Registration must be received by July 29th. A minimum of 30 participants is needed for the course to occur, so please register NOW!! The course will be held at Grizzly Base.
To attend an NYLT course, a youth must have the following qualifications by the beginning of the course:
- Must be a registered member of a Scouting unit.
- Must have a current BSA Health and Medical Record form parts A, B, and C.
- As of March 1, 2019, Scouts BSA members (male and female) must be at least 13. They must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops.
- Venturers and Sea Scouts (male and female) must be at least 14, or 13 and have completed eighth grade, and fall within the maximum age allowance for their program. They must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews or Ships. It is recommended that they have had at least one year of camping experience. While NYLT is not an outdoor skills course, each participant must have basic camping and outdoor cooking experience.
- Have a unit leader recommendation.

What is Wood Badge?
Wood Badge is the Boy Scouts of America’s advanced, national leadership course open only to Scouting volunteers and professionals. Scouters from Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouts, Explorers and district and council Scouters – including Commissioners – all are welcome and belong here.
What will you see on course?
We do many things on course, like:
- Managing conflict
- Leading change
- Stages of team development
- Coaching & Mentoring
- Leadership for different stages
- Servant leadership
- Project planning
- And more!
These come to you in presentations, games, discussions, activities and other methods.
Why do you want to go?
You want to participate in a Wood Badge course because of things you will learn and do. Here are some of the benefits:
- Stronger units. You will make your Scouting unit — and your scouts’ units — stronger.
- What and why of Scouting. You will have a deeper understanding of what Scouting is and why we do it.
- Experience. You will learn and experience things that will stay with you in Scouting and the rest of your life.
- Fun. You will have fun and you will meet interesting people.
- Other groups. You will make your other groups, like work, church, even family, stronger.
Paying for Wood Badge
Wood Badge training is invaluable! If your troop, pack or crew achieved an Investment in Character & Leadership goal of Garnet or Sapphire, you may even be eligible to attend Wood Badge at no cost!
