As we celebrate Scouting’s 115th Birthday, I find myself smack dab in the middle of our biggest fundraising push of the year. Many of you might not know why fundraising is so important here in the Montana Council. I hope this provides some explanation.
Scouting America, Montana Council is a non-profit organization. We exist to fill a void in our state that would otherwise not be met through government programs, educational programs, etc.
Every year, Montana Council starts at zero with a goal of raising enough funds to support our programs, our camps, our facilities, and – most importantly – the Scouts and volunteers across our state. Without adequate funding, we – like any non-profit – would struggle to provide essential services or meet the growing demands of the people we aim to serve.
It’s not simply “raising money” – it’s about creating the resources and relationships needed to make a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most. Without it, non-profits simply cannot achieve the goals they’ve set out to accomplish.
Here are a few key reasons why fundraising is so important for non-profits:
- Sustaining the Mission: Fundraising helps ensure that a non-profit can continue its work, whether it’s providing food, shelter, education, healthcare, or advocacy. Every dollar raised is an investment in making a positive impact on society.
- Enabling Growth: Successful fundraising allows non-profits to expand their programs, reach more people, and develop new initiatives. It provides the resources to scale their efforts and address emerging issues.
- Building Relationships: Fundraising isn’t just about money; it’s about building lasting relationships with donors, volunteers, and community members. These connections create a network of support that strengthens the non-profit’s ability to achieve its mission.
- Financial Independence: Reliable fundraising efforts reduce dependency on government grants, sponsorships, or other unpredictable sources of income. It enables non-profits to be more self-sufficient and flexible in responding to needs as they arise.
- Long-Term Impact: Effective fundraising strategies provide sustainable income that ensures the non-profit can continue to make an impact in the long term. This long-term commitment benefits the people and communities who rely on their services.
Without Investment in Character & Leadership pledges, popcorn purchases, and special event participation, we could not accomplish the mission of building the future leaders of our world. We couldn’t prepare people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes and we would miss out on a lot of fun while doing it.
For those of you who have contributed – thank you! For those that haven’t, please consider a gift today. And for those who both donate and volunteer – you are the heroes upon whose shoulders we stand. Let’s make 2025 the best year yet for the Montana Council!
