A few days removed from our Annual Convention, I’ve been reflecting on the people who filled that room—the leaders, volunteers, families, staff, and friends who make Scouting in Montana not just possible, but powerful. Each year I say this—and each year it rings even more true: YOU are the strength of this council.
And once again, I’m proud to report that we are another year up the trail—stronger, steadier, and more united in our mission to prepare young people for life.
Reflecting Challenges & Commitments
Two years ago, we set out to move from good to great. Last year, we saw real momentum. Today, it’s clear we are climbing with purpose – and the view continues to improve.
That progress is grounded in our Long Range Vision for Montana Council, built on four pillars: Membership, Finance, Properties, and People. This vision, stretching ten years and beyond, works hand in hand with our Strategic Plan to guide where we’re going and how we’ll get there.
Membership: Ready for What’s Next
The effects of COVID disrupted Scouting across the country, but we are seeing a strong emergence. That progress is not accidental – it’s the direct result of your recruiting efforts, your visibility in the community, and your commitment to delivering a quality program.
The data points to something encouraging: growth is coming. The question is whether we’re ready for it.
Our goal is 4.25% annual growth. In 2025, we achieved 4.5% growth in Cub Scout membership – a clear sign we’re moving in the right direction.
But growth without quality isn’t success. Training remains essential. Families joining Scouting deserve well-prepared leaders and strong programs. Delivering anything less is not an option.
Financial Strength & Endowment Growth
Financially, 2025 was another standout year. Record-setting Investment in Character & Leadership (ICL) efforts, strong special event fundraising, and $1.25 million in popcorn sales all point to one truth: people believe in Scouting.
That belief fuels everything we do at the unit level across the Montana Council.
We also closed the year with a balanced operating budget—continuing our commitment to fiscal discipline and transparency.
Just as important, our endowment fund continues to grow through planned gifts, legacy commitments, and major contributions. These aren’t just financial investments—they are lasting statements of confidence in the future of Scouting in Montana.
Our goal is ambitious: 14% annual growth. In 2025, we nearly doubled it.
Properties: Investing in Experience
Our camps remain central to the Scouting experience—and they continue to evolve.
K-M Scout Ranch recently completed the Richardson Logistics Center, strengthening operations and storage. Looking ahead, plans include expanded STEM facilities and enhancements to shooting sports.
Camp Melita Island continues to see exciting developments, including a new Trading Post, a new Ranger Home, and a new embarkation point at the Gateway. This summer, a purpose-built “Island Scout” boat will join the program, with plans for a new dining hall and boathouse.
In 2025, more than 1,200 campers participated in formal camp programs, with many more engaging in unit and district activities across the state.
At the same time, we remain committed to responsibly managing all properties, including evaluating a few smaller, less accessible sites for potential divestment.
Where We Stand
We are in a position of strength – but also one of opportunity.
Our five-year Strategic Plan continues to guide us through seven key priorities: Safety, Volunteers & Staff, Finances, Communication, Training, Community Presence, and Recruitment.
These are not separate efforts – they are interconnected. Each one strengthens the others.
And above all, one priority remains unchanged: the safety of our Scouts – always.
Final Thoughts
The winds are still at our backs. The trail ahead is bright. But progress only happens if we move forward together.
So here’s the challenge:
- Recommit.
- Re-engage.
- Bring a friend.
- Mentor a leader.
- Sponsor a Scout.
- Share our story.
What we are building in Montana Council is not just meaningful – it’s lasting.
Every volunteer, every staff member, every leader at every level is part of something bigger. Together, we are “Team 315.”
And here’s a simple, tangible goal for the year ahead: recruit one Scout and become fully position-trained.
Thank you for your passion. Thank you for your persistence. And thank you for your partnership in making the Montana Council a beacon of what’s possible when people believe in the mission of Scouting.
