Scouting Chainsaw Basic Training Course

October 24 - 25, 2026

Are you interested in becoming trained to operate a chainsaw and help our camps?

Join us at K-M Scout Ranch on October 24 – 25, 2026, for the Scouting Chainsaw Basic Training Course. This course combines classroom and hands-on instruction for volunteers with varying skill levels.

Chainsaw training is required for anyone using a chainsaw on Montana Council properties or during any Scouting activity.

Training points include:

  • Selecting and properly using required safety equipment
  • Chainsaw maintenance
  • Tree-felling techniques
  • Identifying common tree-cutting hazards

Participants must be at least 21 years old and provide their safety equipment, including a helmet, chaps, gloves, long pants, and sturdy boots. Participants must also bring Parts A and B of their Annual Health and Medical Record.

Lodging is available for up to six participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Tent and RV camping is also available. Meals will be provided.

Scouting America now requires chainsaw training to be renewed every five years. If you completed your training before 2021, your training expires on September 1, 2026.

Those with previous chainsaw training are encouraged to participate, share their experience, and renew their certification.
