Every summer, as the sun rises over the mountains and the scent of pine fills the air, something extraordinary happens across Montana.
Tents are raised, campfires crackle, and young Scouts embark on adventures that shape their character, build resilience, and forge lifelong friendships. But behind every badge earned and every trail hiked stands a quiet hero: the adult volunteer who made it all possible.
These volunteers – parents, mentors, community members – don’t do it for recognition. They do it because they believe in the power of Scouting.
They take time off work, rearrange schedules, and pack their gear to ensure youth have the opportunity to experience the magic of summer camp. They drive the vans, haul the gear, cook the meals, and stay up late making sure every Scout is safe, supported, and thriving.
The Impact That Echoes Through Time
It’s easy to overlook the significance of these efforts in the moment. Youth may not say thank you today. They may be too busy chasing frogs, learning knots, or laughing around the campfire.
Years from now, however, when they reflect on the experiences that shaped them, they’ll remember. They’ll remember the adult who believed in them enough to show up. The one who drove them to camp, helped them put up their first tent, or encouraged them to try something new.
Memories don’t fade – they deepen. They become the stories told around future campfires, the lessons passed on to the next generation, and the foundation of a life built on courage, kindness, and community.
Stepping Up When Others Don’t
In a world where it’s easy to say, “I’m too busy,” you choose to say, “I’ll go.”
You stepped up when others wouldn’t. You made the commitment, took the leap, and gave your time so that young people could grow into leaders, adventurers, and citizens of character.
To every adult volunteer who has taken youth to camp with Scouting America, Montana Council: thank you. Your impact is immeasurable. You are the reason these camps thrive, and you are the reason these Scouts will carry the spirit of Scouting with them for the rest of their lives.
From All of Us—Thank You
Whether you’ve been doing this for years or just took your first trip this summer, know this: you are appreciated. You are seen. And you are making a difference that will echo for generations.
So, here’s to the unsung heroes of summer camp. You may not wear a cape, but to the youth you’ve guided, you’ll always be a legend.
Yours in Scouting,
